Surrealism Final Images

Following my research into surrealism I decided to continue my work and make a series of eight images on the subject. Silvia gray’s work loosely inspired my work and gave me and idea of what I wanted to photograph, while Alexey Titarenko’s work with movement was also an influence on my images. The majority of surrealism deals with three major themes Sex, Religion and Death with this in mind I believe my images deal with death as the character throughout these images seems very ghostly, my images like Gray’s feel very dream like.

All my images build on my experimental image for surrealism of someone in a monkey mask standing in different positions but layered over the top of each other, this made the subject look like they were moving. I tried to add to this in my eight images so I tried more movement than the original image, the result I feel is effective in some images but not others as some of the images feel a bit sloppy as the subject did not move properly when they were taking position leaving the image to not line up properly.

I shot these images using very standard lighting: one key light this gives the images a very standard look making them easier to add together. I adjusted the white balanced to give them images a standard feel and adjusted the contrast on each image to make the subject stand out more from the background when added together. I also adjusted the saturation of the images to drain them of colour, I did this as it gives the images more of a dream feel. I then layered the images on top of each to create the movement effect I was trying to achieve.

Overall I think the idea of these images was better than the outcome as they seem rushed and the outcome of them is somewhat disappointing. I wish I would have shot these images using a tripod to make them more stable this would have made the look of them much better as they would have fit together more easily.
