FMP Lighting Experiment

One idea for my FMP is to shoot products in an abstract and unique way, I have used Gels before but only one of two, I wanted to use as many as possible to see the affect this gives. Unfortunately I could only get hold of three lights but though this would be sufficient to see how the lights play with each other.

Jenny Van Sommers image below does this in the perfect way, I wanted to see if I could recreate this soft gel lighting, I like they way the colour flow into each other smoothly without hard lines I wanted to see if it was possible to recreate this in my own work.

Straight away you can tell that the lighting is much harder than the previous image and the colours don’t combine with each other in the way I wanted, I think it works well on the actually shoe but they don’t play with each other on the background.

To shoot this I had a light head with a deep dish cover with a yellow gel on a floor stand behind the product table, I then had two lights with gels to the sides, the light on the left was at a higher angle and far from the shoe, and the light on the right was at a neutral angle to the shoe but close to the shoes. This set up Gave a harder light on the back of shoe but I was i would have moved all the lights further away from the table to make them softer, I could have also diffused the light more.

A problem I seem to have was the colours leaving a noticeable white line to the left of the shoes I tried to correct it by moving the lights and making adjustments to the power of the lights but in the end I figured out it was due to the shape of the table. I think this would work better with a flat surface, I would also like to try a more reflective surface to see what that does to the image. If I was to shoot this again i would do multiple shots to try and remove the reflection from the Jordan logo.

FMP Commercial Photography Ideas

One Idea for my FMP is to shoot a series of commercial photos in an abstract way, weather that be through lighting or through physical means to make the shoot look like and illusion. I hope to shoot shoes in the studio and not on location as this will give the shoe a more surreal feel.

I hope to experiment with different lighting set ups that will be inspired by Jenny Van Sommers, her projects rely on the way the projects are lit and she often uses a range of gel lighting to make the products and backgrounds match seamlessly, this plays with yours eyes and its an effect I would really like the utilise.

Ben Scott is another inspiration for this project, he directed a bmx video called Kaleidoscope which is designed to confuse you. He uses lighting effects and long with camera angles and physical props to trick your eyes into thinking something is fake when its not, I love they way this is achieved through simple techniques and hope to somehow incorporate this into my own work.

In my last project I shot a series of images showing shoes levitating I liked the abstract feel of these images but I feel I could build on this and this is what I hope to achieve If i expand on this project.

Professional printers

There are a range of businesses that offer film printing services ranging from disposable cameras to high end exhibition printing, this  can be done on the high street or from an order services.

The basic services offer by high street chains like Boots and Tesco include photo printing from either or film or digital media and personalised printed gifts. This type of printing service would be useful when you need low quality prints for personal use.

Darkroom printing  can be done to change a piece of film to make them images look how you want personally, film can be changed in a range of ways in a darkroom from changing the size of the images, adding contrast and cropping the images. You would use this more for small personal projects where duplicate prints are not needed or experimenting with different ideas and techniques.

Highstreet photographic specialists offer a range of high quality professional printing services as well as  photographic themed products. They can also batch print images with specific instruction like certain effects or sizes. This would be most effective when high quality prints are needed for personal projects or for small exhibitions.

Professional Printers like metro prints in London these offer a large range or printing services from super high quality canvas prints to extremely large prints. These types of prints would be used for national gallery or for one of pieces of art made by professionals.

Product Spot The Difference

For Both images I started in RAW Converter and cropped to the image and adjusted the white balance. Then when the image was imported in photoshop I adjusted the contrast and brattiness to a suitable level on both the shoes and the background, I added more contrast to the shoes to make them stand out from the background. I then removed the strings from the shoes by using a combination of the stamp tool and healing brush, after romping the sting there was a visible removal Mark so I added noise in which removed it.

FMP -Research Proposal

For my FMP I have multiple ideas I could expand on, I will first pursue each different idea before I am confident I know what I am going to do.

Documentary photography –                                                                                         This is my favourite field within photography as I like the power and influence it can have. If i was to do this I would like to follow a person or group or people to make the series of images really personal to the audience.

Commercial Photography –                                                                                            I really like working with products and I feel that this would be a good field to work on my FMP as there is so much that can be done with product photography. I would want to make my images stand out from other similar images by making them quite abstract while not distracting from the product that is being advertised.I would also like to work with bigger objects like cars as I have not worked with them in an advertising sense. I’m going to use a range of media as influence including English Videographer Liam Eyles and Photographer Matthew Seed.
